5/22/2022 0 Comments Week 12It's the final week of Genius Hour and I have just finished my final book of the project which is The Hate U Give. This project really made me appreciate books and just reading in general. It made my love for reading grow stronger and I could genuinely say that the whole process had a really good impact on me and my reading. Now with the book, this book had a really powerful message and really brought attention to racism. I plan on watching the movie so that I can have more of a visual understanding of everything and see the characters play everything out. Book Review - The Hate U GiveThe Hate U Give is about a sixteen-year-old girl, Starr Carter, who is experiencing both worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the upperclass suburban prep school she attends. When Starr witnesses the shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, who was unarmed, she wants justice for him. But whatever Starr decides to do or what she doesn't decide to do could upset her community or put her life in danger. This book really brings awareness to the topic of racism which I think is really important. I really liked this book and think that everyone should read it to attempt to understand the struggles and even the Black Lives Matter movement. I would definitely recommend this book and would give it a 10/10.

5/15/2022 0 Comments Week 11The Hate U GiveFor my final book in this project I will be reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I know there is also a movie but I have not watched the movie yet so I plan on reading the book first. I have seen trailers on it and know that it is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. I have also heard other people say that the movie was really good and really brought awareness to racism in America. I look forward to reading it since there has been lots of talk about it and with all of the recent events that have happened with the Black Lives Matter movement. It also relates the book I read before this one in week 9 and 10 which was Born a Crime. A book review about The Hate U Give will be found in week 12!
5/8/2022 0 Comments Week 10It's the end of week 10 and I have had somewhat of a break since I explained in week 9 that we had read Born a Crime as a class. I think I did benefit from this break especially since I had already read Born a Crime and it gave me some time to just read the new book that we are reading now as class. Reading Born a Crime gave me a sense of comfort since I felt like I could relate to it more than others but it was hard sometimes to discuss the topics that were included in it. Book Review - Born a CrimeBorn a Crime is book written by Trevor Noah telling his life story and different struggles that he has been through and experienced. With him being from South Africa, he was literally born a crime since his mother was a black Xhosa woman and his father a white Swiss man which was illegal and could be punishable by five years in prison. He faced many obstacles in his life since he could really be seen with his mother because he was mixed. He also was one of the only mixed kids in his school which caused confusion about who he wanted to surround himself with. So far Born a Crime is probably one of the most well-told stories about someone's life that I have read. Trevor has a specific way of telling a story that makes you want to listen and continue to read. I would even read this book again because of how much I enjoyed it. Definitely would give it a 10/10.
5/1/2022 0 Comments Week 9Born a CrimeFor my next book I will be reviewing Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. Born a Crime is a book we read in my English class together for a whole unit. I have been struggling somewhat to read so I wanted to do this book since we have finished it and really went in depth with talking about the details in this book. This book can be really hard to read since it talks about very serious topics like racism, domestic violence, and assault. Mr.Barker did a really good job of giving us the opportunity to have discussions in small groups about different topics and chapters in the book. As a minority, I found it really interesting to see that there are other people who experience some of the same things I do and even have the same thoughts as me when I thought it was just me thinking some of these things. Overall, I think Trevor Noah did a really good job of telling his life story by writing this book.
4/24/2022 0 Comments Week 8It is the end of week 8 and I have just finished Five Feet Apart. I liked both the movie and book and they were both very similar. I plan on watching the movie again since it has been some time since I watched it so I can compare the two but overall, I think they both had the same plot. I think that I have been successful in reading these past 8 weeks especially since I have been keeping up with the reading each week so far. I do still have two books left in four weeks but I think that if I have already been keeping up at this point, then I can definitely continue to do it. Book Review - Five Feet ApartFive Feet Apart is about two teens who meet in the hospital because they both have Cystic Fibrosis. They are the total opposite with Stella being very organized with her treatments and medications and Will being tired of all the drugs and medications which makes him a rule-breaker. They fall in love but the only problem is that they can't get within five feet of each other because they would both be risking their lives with the diseases that they both have. I really enjoyed this book even though it was very sad to know that events like this could really happen because these are real diseases that people suffer from. I do recommend this book and would definitely give it a 10/10.
4/10/2022 0 Comments Week 7Five Feet ApartFor my fourth book I decided to read Five Feet Apart by Racheal Lippincott, Mikki Daughtry, and Tobis Iaconis. I have watched the movie and have heard that it is slightly different than the book. The movie was really good and will make you cry, it is a really sad but sweet. I think the reason that it really hit me hard was because these are real illnesses that people go through and suffer from. I have read good reviews on the book so far but I do wish I had read the book before I had watched the movie since the book was released before the movie was. Hopefully I enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed the movie. These pas
4/3/2022 0 Comments Week 6It is the end of week 6 and I have just I finished reading The Song of Achilles. I think it was a really interesting book that I probably would not have picked out myself but I really enjoyed reading it and am glad that someone else recommended it to me. I am glad that I am already halfway through the project and and only have three more books left to read. So far I have enjoyed this project and it has definitely made my love for reading stronger. I plan on reading throughout the summer and I do not think this would have happened without this project so therefore, I am really thankful for this project and I think others could say the same. Book Review - The Song of AchillesThe Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is a retelling of one of the world's oldest stories and almost everyone knows the ending. However, Miller has written a beautiful love story about war and glory. Her choice to put the book from the point of view of a minor character in the Iliad gives the story a whole different meaning. At first, I had a hard time getting into the book but after reading the whole thing I can definitely understand why they were necessary and meaningful to the plot of the story. I have heard that when reading the book for the second time you really pick up on smaller details. Seeing Achilles and Patroclus' relationship grow throughout the story is really heartwarming and makes the ending shattering at first until both characters are given the ending that they deserve. It comes as no surprise to me that Miller took 10 years to write The Song of Achilles. I genuinely loved this book and would 100% recommend it to others!
3/27/2022 2 Comments Week 5The Song of AchillesFor my next book I will be reading The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This book was recommended to me by Ashtyn in my English class. She only had good things to say about this book so I decided that it would be my third book that I would read for my Genius Hour Project. It is 416 pages so I will be splitting it up at about 200 pages per week to have it finished by the end of week 6. Right now The Song of Achilles has 4.5 stars on Barnes & Noble. Hopefully I can also give it a high star rating at the end of reading it. In week 6 you will find a book review on The Song of Achilles.
3/20/2022 4 Comments Week 3 & 4This is Where it EndsFor my second book I decided I would read "this is where it ends" by Marieke Nijkamp. I had heard great things about this book and actually found out about it from Tik Tok. People were talking about how good of a book it was so I wanted to find out for myself. I realized Mr.Barker had it in his library and decided it would be the second book I would read to be part of my Genius Hour Project. So far I have really liked it and it can be hard to read at times just because it is about a very sensitive topic which is school shootings but while reading it I have come to realize how real these situations really are. These situations and experiences can have a very strong impact on a person and their life. I am not completely finished with this book and I know I should be since it is the end of week four, but I plan on finishing it up this week and adding my review on it soon. To make up for my procrastination I will still try to get my third book done by the end of week six since that is still my goal but I will keep updating my blog. Stay tuned for a book review! Book Review - This is Where it EndsThis is where it ends is about four different high school students who talk about their horrifying experience with the shooting that happened in their high school in Alabama. They all have history with the gunman, Tyler, but coming from different backgrounds, they all decide to explain their different points of views since each one of them has a different relation to Tyler. This novel has a strong effect on the reader and leaves the reader with a heavy heart. I would definitely recommend this book and give it a 10/10.
3/6/2022 7 Comments Week 2This is the end of the second week in my Genius Hour Project. I have just finished my first book and will start my next one tomorrow. I would say that these past 2 weeks were successful since I finished my book in time and I plan on writing my review on it tomorrow since we have a day off of school. I plan to do some research on how to write well written and thought out reviews so that other readers can get an idea if they would enjoy this book or not. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the ending surprised me a lot more than I thought it would. It was very unexpected and did not end in the way I thought it would. I hope to read the next book since it is a sequel and might even read it for this project. I will add my review onto this blog post when it is complete and finished. I used this website for research on how to write a book review. https://bookriot.com/how-to-write-a-book-review/ Book Review - A Good Girl's Guide to Murder A Good Girl´s Guide to Murder is about student Andie Bell who was murdered five years ago and Sal Singh is guilty for it. Everyone knows and believes it but Pippa Fitz-Amobi believes there is more to the story and she is determined to find out. She decides to make her final year project about this case and starts to uncover more and more secrets about Andie. She sets out to find her killer and to find the real truth about what happened. Overall, this murder mystery is a thriller and makes you want to read more by Holly Jackson like Good Girl, Bad Blood. I definitely would give this book a 10/10.
